Gallery Art
While some people view gallery art as sometimes pompous or snooty, I look at gallery art as centuries of communication preserved for other generations to study and understand. Up until somewhere between the 18th and 19th centuries, artists were restricted to painting only commissioned religious depictions and portraits of wealthy patrons.
However, due to the rapid changes in technology and transportation caused by the Industrial Revolution, people views became much worldlier. This change influenced painters to begin painting new ideas that included real normal people, places, and ideas that interested them. This in turn has become a larger form of communication that allows us, the viewer, to understand how the artist viewed the world during their time period.
